Student Winning the 1st place Sharing her Best Video Award of the Columbia Model Entrepreneur

Julia Chu

  • How should I begin this project?
  • Where

I came across the Model Entrepreneur Competition held by the Columbia Business School’s Venture For All® Program and World Journal when I was browsing the World Journal Site one day.

  • Who

I asked some of my friends if they would like to participate in this competition. I formed a group with three other friends and we signed up for the competition as a team. The four of us are each from different high schools, so we scheduled regular after-school hours dedicated to discussing and working on our business proposal.

  • What

The goal of the Model Entrepreneur Competition is to encourage young talents to stand out from pure imagination and speak out innovative ideas with business feasibility.

  • Notes

To attend this competition, I would like to challenge myself to speak up and learn to sell and also defend my team’s ideas in front of industry experts and opposing teams. I was both nervous and excited because it was my first time attending an international competition, but I knew I would learn a lot from it.

  • What inspired us to come up with such a brilliant idea?
  • Time

To start off the project, we started brainstorming ideas for our business pitch in early April 2021.

  • Idea

After reading an eBook last summer, we wanted to share it with our friends. However, eBooks can’t be shared unless we provide our accounts and passwords, which can cause privacy issues. This prompted us to think, “How can we share our eBooks? and “Why can’t eBooks be shared?” This inspired us to come up with the idea of Crypto eBooks. A service where people can resell eBooks just like paper books.

  • Application

As the professor once shared some information about Beeple, an artist who used Non-fungible Token (NFT) to sell his artworks and made a lot of money. Through NFT, authors and publishers can easily keep track of the ebooks’ whereabouts and transfers while preventing copyright infringement. Therefore, we apply NFT and blockchain to our service to solve the problem. We believe that many people are facing this problem, and we wanted to provide a solution.

  • Submission

We ended up submitting our business proposal at the end of May.

  • Notes

In my opinion, the most challenging and difficult part about the competition is to come up with a business idea. As I have experienced, the easiest way to come up with a practical idea is to live with the heart. Nowadays, our society is increasingly distracted by new and arising stimuluses. We often became oblivious to the surrounding people and environment. Observation is a significant part of our lives that can lead us to speculate what can be changed to improve people’s lives. As the saying goes: “You have to acknowledge a problem exists before you can actually go about finding a solution.” Defining a problem and providing a solution is equally important in an equation. The ability to acknowledge the problem and the skill of problem-solving are key skills to help launch a successful business.

  • How do we turn our fantastic idea into a reality?
  • Struggle

We received the information that we got into the final round two weeks before we had to turn in the final version of our project. Additionally, the final exam was around the corner so we had no time to waste and rest. Due to the hectic schedule, one of our team members decided to leave, and the rest of us weren’t sure if we should proceed with the competition. However, as the initiator of this project, I decided to attend the final round and tried to make the best out of this experience.

  • Videos

We made two videos for our project. I have always been interested in film-making and editing which made the process of conceptualizing our ideas into visual and animated presentations relatively simple. First, we had to write down the script and make sure what we had to say fits in the given time window. Second, we made voice recordings that I combined with and matched up to the animations. The purpose of creating the two videos was to let people understand our business easily and for people around the world to vote for the best video award.

  • Table Topics

On the other hand, we have to prepare for the upcoming table topics from judges and an opposing team that we were assigned to. To win this live panel judging session, we had to be extremely familiar with our business and be able to explain every aspect in a clear, convincing, and reasonable manner. We were also provided the opposing team’s business plan prior to the Q & A and had to prepare critical questions to ask them in order to “knock them down.” For the most part, we didn’t think too much about why a question was asked in a certain way. We took our time hearing the questions and tried to improvise along with what we had already prepared. It is interesting in retrospect to note the different kinds of questions being asked, some were challenging as they targeted specific business facets of our idea while others exposed topics my team and I hadn’t thought of.

  • Notes

We spent more than three hours a day online to complete the videos and prepare table topics. We also emailed some of our teachers for their suggestions and potential questions that any opposing team or investors could raise about our idea. They ended up coming up with many questions that we would otherwise never have thought of, and they had certainly helped prepare us and improved the development and refinement of our idea. The lesson I learned here is that don’t be afraid to ask for help and in most cases, teachers are more than willing to provide support. It’s true that we can learn different things from different people. During the process, I learned a lot about cryptocurrency, investment, finance, and so much more about subject matters that we don’t usually learn in school.

  • Award
  • Effort

We won the Best Video Award. We made a promotional video and sent it to our teachers to ask them to give us some suggestions. I think this is a really helpful way to improve ourselves by receiving ideas from different perspectives.

  • Promote

We set up a website and created social media accounts to promote our projects and ask friends and family to vote for us on the voting day.

  • Appreciation

First of all, I would like to thank my teammates for putting effort into this project and together we didn’t give up.

  • Connection

I truly believe that the problems we face might do so. When I shared the idea of Crypto eBooks with my teacher, she also mentioned that one of her friends faced the duplication issue in the field. This encouraged us a lot, we know that our idea is the solution for the world.
