Reminder: G11 TOEFL IELTS Official Test Submission

Dear Parents and Students:

There are 14 Days left before the deadline of submitting your TOEFL/IELTS official test scores on December 24th, and there is still room to improve this submission rate.

One greatest difference between the students of this year and those of the previous one is that most of the students this year have attained their official TOEFL or IELTS scores earlier. We teachers are proud of you! Remember, the purpose of submitting the official test scores–a prerequisite to apply for foreign universities–is to enable the students to understand how far they fall behind the target score required by their ideal schools. There is always a gap between the official test scores and the mock test scores, which is highly correlated with the sense of taking the real test in the real time and with the highly repetitive and limited database of the mock test. Thus, to attain a higher possible score, students need to start up their test prep earlier, which, subsequently, allows them sufficient time to prepare for the SAT and AP tests in March and May, respectively, and for their college application ultimately. This submission will account for 30% of your performance in college counseling class. The following table shows the turn-in rate of each class:

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q1:What if I did not meet the requirement of target scores set by the school?

A1:It is okay if you do not achieve the target score this semester. However, if you do not know how to improve your test abilities, please share with Ms. Karen and Eva who will help you to plan your study. But you still need to turn in the test result of TOEFL or IELTS official tests. The test result won’t affect your total scores of this class. However, this test result can serve as a warning for more effort during the winter break: do more practice tests or work on academic vocabulary. We hope you can make progress in the second semester of G11.

Q2:My first TOEFL test scores were not good. Would it be better to take IELTS? I don’t know whether I should take TOEFL or IELTS. What should I do?

A2:No matter what kind of test it is, the first battle will not be easy, yet it’s a way for us to test our actual ability. Furthermore, capable students can do the job no matter what kind of exam it is. The question is whether students are familiar with the question types, make good use of skills, and allocate the time well. These abilities all need time to hone in order to forge strong combating skills and unwavering confidence. In short, early preparation is the secret to victory!

The most problems for the senior students were:

1. Insufficient vocabulary: I can’t understand the text from the beginning to the last paragraphs, so I just give up.

2. Insufficient time: Students can do it well if they are given more time, but they do not manage the time well, so they can’t finish it in the end.

3. Inapt spelling: I can read it when I see it and understand it when I hear it. However, I can’t spell it, so I will never turn my ideas into appropriate wording in writing.

4. Incohesive and Incoherent points: Students only show off with the difficult vocabulary they know, but not express their ideas to answer the topic.

5. Ineloquent speaking skills: Students have difficulty maintaining a conversation and extending on topics.

Currently, most overseas universities accept TOEFL and IELTS tests. Roughly speaking, universities in the UK and Australia prefer IELTS, while universities in the United States and Canada prefer TOEFL. However, students who are not sure about their future study plan can try both types of mock tests at the same time to see which testing approach suits them best.

Last call to the laggers: December 24th is your deadline to submit TOEFL or IELTS test scores. This score is also an assignment weighing 30% of your CLC performance. If you have already taken an official TOEFL/IELTS test, please submit your score IMMEDIATELY via Google classroom!

Please contact Ms. Karen TEL: 85128240 & Ms. Eva TEL: 82128262 if you have any questions about the preparation of language proficiency tests.

Best Regards,

CLC Team
